The Star Princess by Jessica E. Subject - Blog Tour/Giveaway

THE STAR PRINCESS
A Beyond Fairytales story
By Jessica E. Subject
New Adult Erotic Sci-Fi Romance
ISBN: 978-1-61333-765-3

In one week, Princess Ro’sa will board a spaceship, leaving her home on Minjet to be with her betrothed on Earth. The only problem is, she detests the prince’s selfish and arrogant ways, preferring to spend time with his personal aide, a man who stirs her desires in ways she never imagined possible with his radiant blue eyes and smouldering lips. And oh, the way he touches her.

Earth’s post-apocalyptic landscape offers little but the alliance offers much and a princess must do her duty, no matter the danger to her person and to her heart.

As the sun sets below the horizon, an old man sits on a wooden bench at the edge of the park. Behind him lies the lush Turtle Pond Woods, where the flora grows so thick it is difficult to trek through without carving one’s own path. In front of the man, a crowd gathers as if he has called them there to reveal a momentous secret.

The man with the long, gray beard and feet dangling above the ground is a collector of stories. Dressed in woolen green britches and a red shirt, he is ready to tell his tale.

He opens his eyes, enhancing the wrinkles on his face. The people hush, waiting for him to speak, but he remains silent, instead banging a long steel pipe on the ground. Upon the third tap, fireworks burst into the sky behind him. Gold rains on the crowd, resembling coins rather than sparks of light. It is nothing more than an illusion by the master storyteller. The man raises his hands in the air, and the people quiet once more, settling in front of him.

With his electric-blue pet tarantula in his lap, the man speaks. “I am Nicodemus, and I have a tale to tell you, a futuristic story of love and mistaken identity. You may have heard of The Star Money by the Brothers Grimm. But in my version, the little girl was not so little, and she was not born on Earth but arrived here from a planet far, far away.

“So, this evening, for your listening pleasure, I give you The Star Princess.

“Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Ro’sa Ka. Though princess of Minjet of the Mintakan solar system, she would soon leave the star system with her betrothed, a man she’d never met, destined to marry and live on Earth. As nervous as she was about the union, the prince arrived on the planet in far worse condition....”

Some Like It Royal by Heather Long - Review/Giveaway

It’s The Role of a Lifetime…

Living out of a car and waiting tables to make ends meet is hardly the stuff of fairy tales. So when a gorgeous man approaches Alyx Dagmar with a wild story about her royal lineage and an even wilder proposition, the aspiring actress is sure he’s got the wrong woman.

Self-made billionaire Daniel Voldakov needs connections before he can expand his software business into Europe. A blue-blooded fiancĂ©e would open all the right doors—and Daniel’s certain he can tempt the pretty but penniless Princess Alyxandretta to accept the part she was born to play.

Alyx can’t resist Daniel’s offer, and throws herself into the role. But as the paparazzi fall in love with their “storybook romance,” Alyx finds herself drawn to Daniel in ways she’d never imagined. Are his returned affections true, or all just part of the plan? He’ll do anything it takes to prove his love, and to make her see that the only happily ever after he wants is with her…the real her.

Some Like It Royal has everything needed to put me right into that feel good frame of mind. I absolutely adored Alyx and her suspicion of Daniel when she first meets him, because really, any heroine that just instantly believes a man who says she’s a long lost princess needs her head examined. The quips exchanged between these two are some of the funniest I’ve read in a long time.

Daniel is persistent, and obviously unprepared for how living in close quarters with someone he finds so attractive can lead to so much more. I enjoyed the twists and turns their relationship took as it wound its way around to a beautiful happily ever after, and believe me it’s beautiful, I totally cried at the end.

I love some of the stunts Daniel pulls and one of my favorite lines came from one of those moments.

““You son of a bitch."

Yep. That definitely wasn't in the script.””

With lines like that, I could easily see that there was a sense of humor on Ms. Long’s part and that she really enjoyed her characters and they were real to me, someone I could be friends with. I think one of the things that make this such a great book is the way that the language is used, its dialogue but it paints a picture of the characters.

““What's with the princess schtick? Do you think if you say it enough it will happen? Like Beetlejuice?””

I sat and just read, I couldn’t put down this book, I’ve even re-read it because this is easily one of my favorite books. I loved Alyx and Daniel and I look forward to more of these feel good and delicious reads from Ms. Long in the future. If she gives the rest of the characters even a fraction of the life she gave Alyx and Daniel, I know that I’ll love them just as much.

Seriously pick this book up, if you enjoy The Princess Diaries and stories like Anastasia but with a modern and well written twist, then Some Like It Royal is just what you need for a feel good read that I can honestly say I’ll re-read again many times over.

Victoria is a business owner, a friend and a succubus, the latter being something she despises with her whole heart. As she works to free others like her from the daily need to feed from sexual partners, she stumbles across her mate. Now she’s fighting destiny and the call of his lust, refusing to sate her need on the one male made for her.

Dominick is a technowizard used to living his life his way. When he arrives at a business meeting and senses his mate, he’s intrigued. When she slams walls up around herself and refuses to even look at him, he goes on the prowl. He uses her sex phone business to get her attention, but can he keep her on the line long enough to capture her heart?

My Review:

I loved this book. From the very beginning and meeting Victoria I was hooked. The idea of a succubus who runs a phone sex company is so original and fun. Ms. Barrymire does an exceptional job of creating fun and unique characters. I understood Victoria’s motivations perfectly and I really liked her. Some of the little details to the world showcasing the aspects of the supernatural portions were intricately woven into the story so well that I could just imagine seeing them and experiencing the wonder myself.

Dominick is perfect with the way he seduces Victoria and all of her senses one by one. I want my own Dominick. I also loved the way this story doesn’t focus on the physical aspect to carry the sex and the attraction. It’s a refreshing twist on most stories out there.

Overall, this is a hot, sexy yet emotional tale that I highly recommend. I can only hope that Ms. Barrymire plays within this world again. I know of at least one other succubus that I’d love to know how their story unfolds.

Excerpt:

Gently coaxing it from the outer box was made more difficult when her hands started to tremble. Inside a large glass terrarium was an extremely rare and awesomely magical plant she’d only seen in text books. A genuine Bridgetium azulerae, more commonly known as the Etraza tree.

“Oh my gods, Vic. Is that what I think it is?”

Victoria couldn’t even nod for fear of dropping the precious plant. It pulsed with magic even as it remained dormant. She knew that it would take a trigger to release the hibernation spell before it would fully become an animated living thing again. As it rested in its tiny environment she could see the miniscule buds on the ends of each branch. The miniature tree was perfect in its structure. Tiny branches spread off a thin trunk. Even though her specimen wasn’t much taller than a book, it had to be hundreds of years old. Once reanimated, the tree would experience all four seasons, cycling through growth, sleep and rebirth each day.

Gently setting the glass case on her desk allowed her to release the breath she’d been holding. It left her lips in a whooshing whisper. “Wow.”

“Holy shit.” Gynger gasped behind her. They both stood there staring, silent for a few moments. “Have you ever seen anything so awesome in your life?”

About Lea Barrymire:

Lea lives in Western New York with her hubby, three children, and miscellaneous critters. Before the rugrats, she lived a life of adventure, following her husband all over Europe with the US military. She’s slept in a car outside Paris, drove six hours just to see tulips in the Netherlands, and knocked ash from her shoes at Pompeii. Now she spends her time in life’s adventures at soccer games, PTA meetings and school plays.

Lea has loved reading from a very young age, spending many sleepless nights devouring books. Science fiction and paranormal were her favorite genres to read as a teenager, and that love bled into her adult life. She started writing during a bout of insomnia, to fill time, and found it filled a creative void. Now she communes regularly with the characters in her head and tries not to laugh out loud when they say something funny.

When Lea isn’t reading, writing or corralling kids, she enjoys watching movies and sciencey shows, or just kicking back and listening to some music.

Guest Post/Giveaway: The Ink Me Tour with Sidney Bristol

Hello! And thanks so much to the team here at Love of Book Ends for hosting me today! *whew* it’s been a crazy couple of weeks for me. The second book in my So Inked series about a bunch of female tattoo artists released and I’m uber excited.

You probably don’t know this, but I’m something of a tattoo nut. I have a bunch, and I’m a sucker for big, brightly colored pieces. So of course I’d write books about tattoo artists!

Since not all artists are the same, and many focus on different schools of tattooing, I thought it was important that the So Inked cast represent the different popular divisions. The heroine of The Harder He Falls is a half Korean second generation artist who specializes in Asian tattoos and artwork. The most popular form we see today are the images borrowed from Japanese culture. But not all elements translate cultures very well.
Take for example the Maple Leaf. Here in America, we’re used to seeing it as a representation of Canada and one of their hockey teams. It’s not a particularly striking or noticeable design, unless the artist does something interesting with the colors.

But in Japan, did you know the Maple Leaf is akin to a red rose on Valentine’s Day? It’s a symbol of love, peace and harmony. Men often give the leaves to the woman they love, a lot like western women get flowers and chocolates. When couples are depicted either in art or tattoos, they’re often under a canopy of Maple Leaves. It’s evident after looking through samples of artwork and tattoos that the Maple Leaf is a very strong element to many tattoos, often as a background or accent piece.

The differences between how I think of Maple Leaves and the Japanese viewpoint could not be more different, and that’s one of the coolest things about learning about the tattoo history. I did a lot of research about the meanings behind all the different kind of Japanese tattoos while writing The Harder He Falls so that I was able to get the details right, but the designs are so nuanced that I am pretty sure my research barely scratched the surface.
On a deeper level, the Maple Leaf is also used to symbolize the turning of life, the transitioning between the seasons. It’s often depicted as being caught on the wind, set adrift either in a winter scene or floating on the water. A single leaf or a bunch of them might stand for the regeneration and resurrection of the tree through the seasons.

The nuances of Japanese tattoos fascinates me. The way a single element, a turn of the leaf, a color choice could mean something totally different. It’s really something you’d want the right artist for. I’d like to think the heroine in The Harder He Falls is that kind of artist.

What would you want to receive from your significant other as a sign of affection?

It can never be said that Sidney Bristol has had a ‘normal’ life.  She is a recovering roller derby queen, former missionary, and tattoo addict. She grew up in a motor-home on the US highways (with an occasional jaunt into Canada and Mexico), traveling the rodeo circuit with her parents. Sidney has lived abroad in both Russia and Thailand, working with children and teenagers. She now lives in Texas where she splits her time between a job she loves, writing, reading and belly dancing.

The Harder He Falls, So Inked #2

A woman who doesn’t have time for love…

A hot night full of hotel-destroying sex was all Kellie wanted from her client-turned-sex god. Between family and work, there isn’t room for love, just hot, sweaty lust. An arrangement for mutual gratification is exactly what Kellie wants, but every kiss, each mind-blowing orgasm twines her heart around a man she cannot have.

A man building a new life…

Quinton’s assumptions about the So Inked shop owner are turned on their head after one session under her tattoo machine. Kellie’s not the vandal he’s looking for, but she’s the woman he wants. In his bed, on the desk or under the stars, he’ll take her any way he can get her. But Quin has secrets and someone is out to destroy him. Someone who has their sights set on Kellie now.
---
Excerpt:

Kellie  shifted on the wooden bench, still restless. The evening breeze was cooler than normal thanks to a cold front blowing in. It was ridiculous that dropping into the nineties was considered a cool spell, but in the height of Texas summer, you took what you got. She swept her hair up into a knot and tipped her head back. The slight dampness of her skin, courtesy of the ever-present humidity, was a small price to pay for being able to sit outside. She’d shed the formfitting dress for jeans and a tank top and felt more like herself for it.

“How hot does it get here?” Quin plunked down their dinner and sat on his side of the picnic table. Behind him the food truck was starting to pack up.

“Can’t handle the heat?” It was too much to ask that the man be able to cope with everything. He’d sat through the tattoo yesterday without complaint, being a heat weenie wasn’t terrible.

His brilliant blue eyes stood out in the dim illumination of the parking lot light. “When you have A/C, why should you?”

“You do realize that it’s going to get at least ten degrees hotter and stay there, don’t you?” She unwrapped the tacos and inhaled the spicy aroma of peppers and onions mixed with tender beef.

Quin made a show of wiping his forehead with a napkin. “I’m going to melt.”
“Why the hell are you still here then?”

He hefted his burrito and wrapped the tortilla tighter. “Family.”

She nodded, understanding that reason above all others.

They descended into companionable silence while they ate. The garbled sounds of a Tejano station melded with the distant sounds of Highway 75 and the light street traffic up and down Greenville Avenue.

“What are you so wound up about, doll?”

Her head snapped around. Quin watched her with one brow arched.

“What?” she asked.

“Your knees are bouncing and you keep looking around. Are you expecting someone I don’t know about?” He glanced over each shoulder.
The bubble of anger swelling in her breast burst. It wasn’t Quin’s fault she was suffering from a case of bitchitis.

Instead of snapping at him, she put her taco down and massaged her temples. “No, I’m just sitting on too much energy and not enough time to expend it.”

“Ah.” He nodded as if he understood. “We used to call that the fight or fuck stage.”

It was her turn to quirk a brow at him. She shivered despite the heat. He had a point; one or the other would help. “Fight or fuck stage? What did you used to do?”

“First I was in the Marines, then I used to fight MMA, semipro.”

Her eyebrows crept upward. Mixed martial arts? She saw Quin in a whole new light, and when she looked at him in this proverbial light, he looked damn good. Fighters came with their own set of issues, but as an MMA hobbyist herself, Kellie had to admit that her bad boy draw was sitting across from her. Growing up around the gym meant she’d become more than competent in a few martial art forms. As an adult, branching out into the grappling, wrestling and more violent aspects had given her a much needed outlet.

Kellie grabbed her drink, the cup covered in condensation, and gulped it down to get moisture back in her dry mouth.

“Why’d you stop?”

“I got hurt. Fractured a few vertebrae. Everyone was amazed I could walk after that. Realized there was little to no chance of me coming back from the injury, so I switched over to training. I like it.”

“Do you train around here?” An invisible fist clenched her heart. There had been a time when she would have known the different gyms, who trained where, which ones were worth going to and so forth.

Quin didn’t answer immediately. He chewed his food without haste and took a drink before replying. “I’m transitioning locations. Parting with someone.

It’s a little messy.”

Her nose wrinkled. “Yeah, I’ve been there. I’m lucky to have Mary as my co-owner. The guy I worked with before her was a man-child.”

He snorted. “Man-child?”

“Yeah, you know. Frat boy types.”

He tilted his head back and laughed. “That’s a good one, doll. Man-child. I’ll have to remember that.”

The pet name slid over her nerves as if it were sandpaper. “Do you have to call me that?”

“What?” He blinked as if he had no clue what she was talking about.
“Lay off the doll crap already.”

He shrugged. “You look like a doll.”

Her scalp itched and her hand balled into a fist. “You think I look like a whore?” she growled. Moments like these she felt as if she were a passenger in her own body. The urge to do something, or even the man across from her, had her muscles too tense and her nerves strung too tight.

Quin jerked his face away from his cup. “What? No. That’s not what I meant. You’re attractive and exotic-looking. You look more like a doll than a real person.”

Heat crawled up her neck and she was thankful the parking light was their only illumination. It was the most convoluted compliment anyone had ever paid her, and it turned her on even more. She folded her taco wrapper into a neat square.

“You realize the term china doll is what men called Asian prostitutes and war brides?”

“The fuck—no. No, that’s definitely not what I meant. Hey, guys probably hit on you all the time. I figured I had to be a little creative.”

She rolled her eyes. “At least you don’t talk to my boobs.”

His gaze dipped to her chest and her nipples perked up at his inspection. She squeezed her thighs together. This was ridiculous. She was not an animal in heat ready to throw herself at some random guy.

“Well, in their defense, most guys probably only come up to your chest, so it’s not entirely their fault.” One side of his mouth kicked up in a roguish smile.
She chuckled and rolled her eyes. “Yeah, blame it on me because I’m tall.”
“It’s not your fault you’re tall. It’s their fault they’re short.”

Her phone buzzed against her hip. Conversation forgotten, Kellie dug it out of her pocket and unlocked the screen. The home-care provider always texted her when Grandma finally went to bed. She breathed a sigh of relief when nothing else was mentioned, which meant the day had passed without incident. She had all night before she would need to go home and face those troubles. For now she was her own woman.

“Everything okay?”

She glanced up from the phone. “Yeah.”

“Good.”

“So you moved here for family. Wife? Girlfriend?”

“None of the above.”

He was unattached and available. She went very still, the possibilities running through her head.

Quin cleared his throat. “My schedule right now doesn’t lend itself to dating.”
Even better. She laid her palms on the rough wooden surface of the table.

“Neither does mine.”

His stillness echoed hers. A predatory awareness came over him, but she wasn’t prey. “That’s a shame.”

She looked him over, even as he did the same. He wouldn’t be the first client she slept with, she wasn’t a saint. But neither did she know him.

“Excuse me.” The food truck cook had walked up on them without either noticing. “I need to load the table, sorry.” He smiled and wiped his hands on the dirty apron.

Kellie swiped the napkin across her face. Had she really inhaled the burrito? Judging by the sad remnants left, yes she had.

“That’s fine. Thanks for the food.”

She rose, gathered up her trash and tossed it in a recycling bin, then leaned against the front of Quin’s truck, out of the way while Quin lent a hand to their cook and helped load the table. Too many thoughts spun around in her head, she needed a minute to get her head screwed on straight, but she wasted those watching Quin’s arms and the way his t-shirt stretched across his back. She pretended she hadn’t been staring when he headed for her, perching her elbows on the hood  and leaning back. The truck’s grille pressed into her back but with her elbows perched on the edge, it thrust her breasts out. As if she needed to draw any more attention to them.

Quin’s gaze roved freely over her body and she could already anticipate his strong touch. He would be an energetic lover, but would he be gentle? Or rough? Did he always have to stay in control? Because sometimes she liked to put a man through his paces.

“I can’t tell what you’re thinking and I’m dying to know.” He stopped less than a foot away.

She smiled slowly, already having a pretty good idea what his answer to her question would be. “I was wondering if you would like to get a room?”

Limited by status…

Ava is a housekeeper aboard Star Spirit, a luxury cruise ship travelling between the Milky Way and the Belvarian System. Coming from a middle-class family on Earth, she is considered by passengers as nothing more than an object to be tossed away when they’re done with her.

Shunned because of his lineage…

Banned from several planets across the universe, Nate struggles to run his interstellar shipping business. But the DNA of an exterminated race runs through his blood, giving him a diluted form of their powers, and leaving him labeled as a terrorist.

Both searching for the one…

Through her 1Night Stand dating service, Madame Evangeline matches these two together for a celestial escape on the pleasure planet, Elatia.

Will Ava and Nate find what they’re looking for, or will their date be just another night on another planet?

Warning: This title is intended for readers over the age of 18 as it contains adult sexual situations and/or adult language, and may be considered offensive to some readers.

My Review:

Aliens, hot aliens and a 1 Night Stand set up by Madame Eve, need I say more. Combining the lines of Elatia and 1NS this story has it all, that suspense of who the date is going to be and can a one night stand last more than a night paired with a pleasure planet like Elatia and I was hooked.

Ava was a great heroine who had just enough of a innocence and a sense of wonder to make me see why she would happily yearn to find someone to take her away and to spend her life with. Nate is loveable because of his uniqueness and the fact that he’s a hero who definitely is ready to settle down with someone who loves him first.

Ms. Subject does a great job of writing a story with aliens and humans and making me love both, making them the same yet different enough that I was even more in love because of their differences. I look forward to reading more of her smoking hot aliens, please keep them coming!

Excerpt:

Ava glanced at the empty seat beside her. Late, as usual.

Michelle raced toward her then slammed onto the cushion. “Jeez, why can’t we have buckled seats in the rooms like other mother travelers?”

She rolled her eyes, sighing. “Who was the guy this time?”

“Oh, not one, but two. Remember the twins from Room 317 I told you about?”

Gasping, she clasped her hands over her mouth. The twins were hot, but two at the same time? She definitely had different morals than her friend. “You’re unbelievable.”

“No, they are. I’m meeting with them again on Elatia. Want to join us? I’m willing to share.”

“No, thank you.” She blushed, imagining having sex with someone her best friend had done the deed with, and being in the same room while Michelle got busy with another guy. She would never do such a thing. Sex happened behind closed doors.

“C’mon. We’re going to be on the pleasure planet. Time to have our sexual fantasies come true.” Michelle squeezed her thigh. “You haven’t had any fun on this voyage at all. Did you meet someone back home before we left and not tell me?”

She shook her head. How she wished. “I’m saving myself.”

Michelle snorted. “For what?”

“Never mind.” She sighed. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“Whatever.” Michelle frowned, turning away, leaving her to wallow in her own guilt.

“By the way,” her friend continued. “You’re supposed to go to the communications center after you’ve escorted your passengers off. You have a message from someone named Madame Evangeline.”

Ava groaned, her stomach twisting in knots. “I didn’t expect to hear from her so soon,” she whispered, fingering the hem of her shirt. Now she’d have the return trip to increase her anxiousness for the date.

Michelle twisted back toward her. “What? Who is Madame Evangeline, anyway?”

Ava glanced around. The rest of the staff seemed to be engrossed in their own conversations—reciting their plans during the layover on Elatia—but she still didn’t want anyone to hear. She leaned closer to her friend. “I applied to a dating service before we left. Madame Eve is the woman who runs it. I’m saving myself for my date.”

Michelle’s eyes widened. “So you’re meeting your special someone on Elatia? Could it be a passenger from the Star Spirit?”

“No.” She dreaded the thought. Guests from the mother traveler would still see her as a second-class being, and she didn’t know of any employee on board looking for a serious relationship. She jumped at the crunch of the ship docking, unprepared to meet her date already. “It won’t happen until we return to Earth. It can’t.”

“Well, do you mind if I come with you to find out? I have to wait for the twins to complete their quarantine period, anyway.”

“Sure.” She could use the support. Clasping her shoulder straps, she took a deep breath, willing her body to stop shaking.

***

“What does it say?” Michelle leaned over her shoulder, trying to read the message on her tablet.

No one had questioned her in the communications center. The technician had simply glanced at her identification then transferred the message to her device. Unable to wait until she arrived in her room, Ava opened the email from 1Night Stand and began to read the letter while in the elevator.

Dearest Ava…

The elevator slowed. She braced for the change in direction.

…I trust the first leg of your journey went well. While you traveled through space, I received an application from a man whom I believe would be an ideal match for you. Since you already have the required inoculations and do not need to go through the quarantine period before entering Elatia, I have arranged for someone to meet you. His name is Jacobus. While he is not your date, he will prepare you then escort you to the man you will spend the evening with.

Affectueusement,

Madame Eve

So soon? The woman had found her a match already? A rush of giddiness filled her before nerves pushed it aside. She wasn’t an impossible match. Then bile burned the back of her throat. What had Madame Eve meant by prepare? She spun to face her friend. “I can’t do this. I thought I could but I don’t even know this guy.”

She paced, the walls seeming to close in on her. “I wanted to find someone to spend the rest of my life with. On Earth. But this is just going to be another one-night stand. I fucked up. What am I supposed to do?”

Her friend shrugged, an amused grin on her face. “You can spend the next couple of days hiding in your room, wondering who you were set up with, and whether things might have worked out, or you can get your ass moving, pack a bag to meet Jacobus and then your date. If in your position, I’d be already gone.”

The difference between her and Michelle…she couldn’t spend the night with someone without feeling some sort of connection. Somehow, her friend could walk away the next morning, ready to find another guy. Maybe she’d feel different if she had guys falling at her feet due to her big bust on her curvy frame. In comparison to her friend, Ava looked plain, resembling a girl in the early stages of puberty. No one wanted to spend a lifetime with her. Every guy she’d ever slept with proved so.

The elevator opened. She stepped out, heading down the hall toward their room, still trying to decide how to spend her layover. Contacting Madame Eve had been a mistake. One-night stands didn’t agree with her heart. She pressed her thumb to the scanner, waiting for the door to open. So much money spent…

She sauntered inside, but stopped when Michelle darted in front of her.

“Quit doubting yourself.” Her friend grabbed her arms, staring her down. “You’re beautiful and deserve to be happy. If you don’t hurry up, I’ll knock you out then find a luggage cart to carry you down to Jacobus myself.”

With a deep breath, she nodded. She could do this. Might as well get my money’s worth. “Okay, I’ll do it.”

Michelle reached in her closet then tossed her a duffle bag. “Good. I’ll help you pack.”
