Breaking the Ice by Jessica Lee - Review

Being the last male standing isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. Mikah Malloy is living proof. His mother and father were both killed during their individual attempts to assassinate the pride leader of Ariel Estates, Silas Murdoch. Now after the dust has settled on his bloodstained family’s name, Mikah must face life alone among his fellow lion shifters. But Silas and his mate, Theo, have decided a vacation in Alaska is just what the doctor ordered to help Mikah come to terms with his grief and his plans for the future. The only snag with their plan is trouble always has a way of finding Mikah, no matter where he runs.

Gideon Haven, eldest son of the Haven pack's alpha, would give his soul for a way off the ice. But when a hunter is out to eradicate his pack one by one, skinning them alive for their wolf pelts, Gideon can’t just walk away.

The predators have now become the prey, but they're determined to hunt down the poacher out to slaughter Theo and Gideon's pack. As for Mikah, he’s more than ready for the job. Putting one's life on the line isn’t a hardship when you don’t care whether you live or die. Even though the heat between Gideon and Mikah becomes nearly impossible to resist, Mikah is determined the tenacious wolf isn’t about to get close enough to break the ice around his heart.

Mikah Malloy has a lot on his mind and is drowning in guilt. He’s also gay but very much in the closet about it. Mikah agrees to go on vacation to Alaska, and saves Gideon Haven, a wolf shifter who is looking forward to leaving his pack once they aren’t in danger any longer.

I really liked Mikah, he is a strong character who is definitely full of turmoil because past events. Gideon was also a great character, he’s patient and willing to help Mikah find out who he really is.

With the addition of the threat of the poacher and other conflicts, this story moves very quickly with lots of action and suspense. I couldn’t put it down once I started and I enjoyed every bit of it and highly recommend it.

Into the Darkness by K.F. Breene - Spotlight/Giveaway

INTO THE DARKNESS
by K.F. Breene

BLURB:

I’d always been different. I saw objects in the night where others saw emptiness. Large, human shaped shadows, fierce yet beautiful, melting into the darkness. I collected secrets like other women collected bells; afraid to fully trust lest my oddities be exposed.

Until I saw him. He’d been gliding down the street, unshakable confidence in every step. It wasn’t just that he was breathtakingly handsome with perfect features. Something about him drew me. Sucked my focus to him and then tugged at my body. As his eyes met mine, I was entrapped.

No one had noticed him. He’d been right there, just beyond the light, but only I had perceived.

I had to know if he was real. Or maybe I really was crazy. And even when my secret box was blasted wide open, dangers hurled at me like throwing knives, I couldn’t stop until I unraveled his true identity.

I just had to know.

“She was fated to live.”
“Then why must you save her?”
“Often Fate is struck down by dumb luck.”

Excerpt:

I huddled on my bed later that night with my knees pulled up to my chest. Thinking. Focusing on what it was I couldn’t remember. It was there, hovering around my conscious mind. Nudging me. Waiting for me to pay attention. To remember. It was the key to that insane situation in the park.

I flung my wet hair out of my face,  pulled the sleeves of my pajamas over my hands, and  glanced out  the window.

The stranger waited. Outside, he watched, staring up at my shaded windows, just wanting me to know he was there. He was waiting for me to come down to him. He had the same questions I did—I was certain  he felt the same things.

How did I know this? I just did. And that scared the holy crap outta me!

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

A wine country native, K.F. Breene moved to San Francisco for college just shy of a decade ago to pursue a lifelong interest in film. As she settled into the vibrant city, it quickly became apparent that, while she thought making and editing films was great fun, she lacked cinematic genius. For that reason, her career path quickly changed direction. Her next goal was a strange childhood interest, conjured at the dining room table while filling out a form. For some reason, her young self wanted to be an accountant. Thinking on it now, she often wonders how she had any friends. Regardless, it was the direction she finally took.

While she could wrangle numbers with the best of 'em, and even though she wore the crown as the most outspoken, belligerent accountant in the world, her mind got as stuffy as her daily routine. It was here that she dusted off her creative hat and began writing. Now she makes movies in her head, not worried about lighting, shutter speed or editing equipment. Turns out, a computer is much easier to manage than a crowd of actors. She should know, she was an actor at one time.

King Cave by Scarlett Dawn - Review

The long-awaited sequel to the bestselling, award-winning King Hall: the revolution is here, but the most dangerous attack may come from within...

The safe, comfortable world of Lily Ruckler and her fellow Mystical Kings and Queens is rocked to the core by the attacks at King Hall. Not only does Lily have to kill the Commoners attacking her people, she also has to assume the mantle of leadership, and bring the surviving Mysticals to King Cave.

It should have been too much, but she is not alone. Ezra becomes her rock, her best friend, the one person who understands. As Pearl and Jack struggle with inconsolable loss, Ezra and Lily work to keep the Mys community safe in their new home, and plan a deadly retaliation.

Their friendship saves them both...but it also draws attention. Whispers. Judgment. It's not normal for Shifters and Vampires to be friends, and when a horrifying truth is revealed, their relationship morphs from unusual to unspeakable. Lily is good at keeping secrets that could get her killed. Is she willing to risk Ezra's life as well?

I was dying for this book, after the events in King Hall, King Cave  couldn’t get here fast enough. This book picks up exactly where King Hall leaves off and focuses quite a bit on Lilly and Ezra, which was just fine with me. While I love Jack and Pearl and wanted to see more of how they were coping with events in King Hall, I was very glad to spend time with Lilly and Ezra.

There are some serious emotions being presented in this book, and Ms. Dawn does an even better job with these emotions this time around, and she did a pretty phenomenal job the first time.

The storyline moves forward and the conflicts between the Mysticals and Commoners, are still there but I felt like it’s still a story driven by characters, and Lilly and Ezra are great characters to drive the story forward.

I am very much looking forward to more from Ms. Dawn and hope I don’t have too long to wait. The Forever Evermore series is now my go to recommendation to anyone who wants a great New Adult series that has likeable characters that keep you emotionally invested in them.

Haunt Me by Heather Long - Review

Recently divorced author MacKenzie Dillon has lost her writing mojo. When she inherits her great aunt’s haunted house in Virginia, she is determined to make a new start. The creepy old house provides inspiration but at what cost?

Successful architect and paranormal skeptic Justin Kent returns to Penny Hollow to fulfill his father’s dying wish of revitalizing their small town. To do that, he needs the allegedly haunted estate at Summerfield. Mac, the new owner, may be gorgeous and spunky, but she refuses to sell.

These two have a dangerous history that spans the ages, but will they discover the truth in time to save their lives?

I enjoy anything Heather Long writes, and Haunt Me has it all, a great hero who has patience and is almost perfect and a heroine that has been wounded before and has to learn to trust again and a haunted house at the center of it all.

MacKenzie “Mac” Dillon is excited to inherit her great aunt’s house in Penny Hollow, it’s the perfect place to hole up and get back to her writing roots. I really liked Mac, she was dedicated to her craft and when she interacts with Justin, she has a lot of attitude and personality that I enjoyed.

Justin Kent, is a pretty close to a perfect hero because he dives right in and helps Mac even when she doesn’t even know she needs help and even when she makes it difficult for him.

This book had me on pins and needles as everything built and I couldn’t put it down because I needed to know what was going to happen and how it was going to in. That’s what elevates Haunt Me from good to great, it produced real emotions in me and I want everyone to read it so I can discuss it.
I highly recommend this story and I really want more Penny Hollow! I need more Penny Hollow, there were so many interesting characters introduced.

Dark Warrior by Julie Shelton - Spotlight/Giveaway

Title: Dark Warrior
Genre: Erotic Medieval Romance/Menage
Flame rating: Scorching
Released: 1/15/2014
Publisher: Siren BookStrand

When Nicholas Herron, Duke of Berwick and his best friend, Rolf Torgesson, two of King Edward III’s most powerful and respected knights, discover a badly beaten young woman hiding in the forest, they swear to protect her.  By the time they learn that she is Lady Kathryn Weston, and that her attacker is none other than her betrothed, Robert Walford, the powerful and ruthless Duke of Pemberton, it is too late.  They have both fallen in love with her and she with them—a love so forbidden it could cost them everything, even their lives.

Bent on revenge, Walford uses his power as Chief Magistrate of the Crown to issue two arrest warrants, one charging Kathryn with attempted murder, the other charging Nicholas with high treason.  For years he has been abusing the authority of his office by bringing false charges of treason against loyal knights and confiscating their wealth to finance his scheme to overthrow Edward and seize the throne of England. Getting his hands on Nicholas’s vast fortune would finally allow him to accomplish his goal.

Traveling to Berwick to serve the warrants in person, Walford’s triumph is short-lived when Nicholas publicly humiliates him and sends him packing.  Incensed, Pemberton hastily assembles an army to lay siege to Berwick castle, vowing to take it apart stone by stone. But Nicholas has anticipated just such a move and he has taken countermeasures to assure the safety of everyone at Berwick—especially Kathryn and their unborn child.

But Walford does something no one expects.  He sneaks into Berwick castle and seizes Kathryn and all of a sudden certain victory becomes a desperate race for Rolf and Nicholas to save their home and rescue the woman they love.

Set amidst the turmoil and pageantry of 14th-century England, Dark Warrior weaves a vivid tapestry of three lost souls who find each other and a deep, abiding love that could ultimately destroy them all.

They were upon her before she could flee.

Rudely snatched up out of the deep sleep of exhaustion, she lay huddled, still and frightened, trying to disappear into the hard, frozen ground. The piles of leaves and pine boughs she had carefully piled on top of herself now seemed totally inadequate to conceal her. The nightmare she’d so desperately tried to escape was finally upon her.

It surrounded her. She could hear it in the form of men shouting, hounds barking, mail clanking, hooves pounding. She could smell it in the form of sour sweat, overheated horses. She could taste it in the form of bitter bile rising in her throat—Sweet Merciful Virgin! He’s sent an entire army after me! To hunt me down and run me to ground like a helpless animal!

Nearly out of her mind with fear, she curled up into a tight ball, making herself as small as possible. She pressed her face into the frozen dirt, hoping against hope that the brown and tan of her stolen clothing would help make her invisible.

Don’t let them find me. Merciful heaven, don’t let them find me. Please don’t—

She let out a shriek as a growling dog sank his teeth into the rough cloth of her sleeve and yanked viciously, sending leaves and twigs flying. Others, barely kept in check by their handlers, lunged at her, snarling and barking, nipping at her with their slavering jaws. She could feel them buffeting her, felt the heat from their bodies. Sweet, merciful God! She threw her hands up in a desperate attempt to protect her face and neck from the animals’ razor sharp teeth. There was no escape. If she so much as moved, they’d rip her to shreds.

Rough hands seized her, jerking her up out of her hiding place amidst a flurry of pine branches, dirt, and dried leaves. She tried to scream, but no sound came from her ravaged throat.

Julie has been writing her entire life, but it wasn’t until November of 2012 that she burst onto the erotic romance scene with her sizzling hot first novel, Loving Sarah, followed by its sequel, Owning Sarah, ten months later. Her third novel, Dark Warrior, set in 14th-century England, is her first historical romance.
Julie lives in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.  Now retired after a 25-year dream career, first as a children’s librarian then a professional storyteller and puppeteer, she has time to devote to her new love, writing erotic romance, the steamier the better, thus following the career path blazed by so many before her—from kiddie lit to erotica.
