Caged Wolf by Heather Long - Review

Triplets, the Buckley brothers were inseparable until everything went wrong one violent, bloody night. A.J. Buckley, the eldest of the trio, faced a human trial for a brutal murder. Found guilty, he was sentenced to twenty-five to life. Without argument or regret, he accepted the sentence. After six years in prison, A.J.’s conviction is overturned on a technicality and he returns to Willow Bend to face a new Alpha and fresh charges.

Vivian Knox was the only witness to the murder. She refused to testify in the human courtroom and spent a year in prison on contempt charges. Once released, she worked tirelessly to free A.J., finally locating a loophole in the case against him. Satisfied with his freedom, the last thing she expected was to be kidnapped to the back of beyond where another judge demands she testify to what she saw that night. This time, contempt is the least of her problems.

Only four people know exactly what happened that night and none are talking. When pack law threatens Vivian, A.J. must stake his claim, but his wolf might be too damaged to help him…

A.J. has spent six long years in prison for a night that was bloody and violent, one he swore everyone involved to secrecy about. Vivian Knox was the only witness, she swore to keep the night a secret, and finds herself in jail for a year on contempt charges, when she emerges, she works hard to free A.J. Once he’s free she’s headed somewhere far away, somewhere she can forget all about that night.

A.J. is a great hero, he’s damaged, but I imagine for anyone six years in prison is going to take a toll, especially if you’re a wolf shifter who has to suppress your animal side to survive. A.J expects to return to Willow Bend to face his death, since he did the unthinkable killed a human unprovoked, or so the official story goes. I’m not going to go into details, but not everything is as it seems. I really enjoyed the way Ms. Long worked to include some moments of humor that broke up the serious nature of parts of this story.

It’s obvious to me that A.J. and Vivian were meant to be together from the start. While they don’t deny the attraction, they seem to be the last ones to realize how deep it really goes. I loved that Vivian works hard to free and protect A.J. at every turn, even though they don’t even really know each other that well.

I highly recommend this story, I could go on about it forever. It’s got great main characters, some fantastic supporting characters that I can only hope get their own books and a bit of a mystery as pieces of what really happened that night and what’s going on with Vivian are revealed slowly and expertly.

Pick it up, it’s a fun read, an enjoyable read and one that I know I’ll revisit in the future.

Bad Traveler by Lola Karns - Review

Recipes are a way of life for Gwen Jones. Take one single mother, her infant daughter and a business plan for a small town bakery. Combine with an eventful cross-country flight, chance encounter with her college crush and a dash of motion sickness. Stir in a few nuts, or family members, and large quantities of chocolate. Will this recipe be an oven oops, or as delicious as her alma mater’s newest coach?

Having survived an attack in Afghanistan that cost him a leg and a wife, Kyle Collins developed a strategy to find meaning in life. He may be an assistant basketball coach but he refuses to sit on the sidelines. When he runs into the woman whose lips are as unforgettable as her brownies, Kyle decides to spice up Gwen’s recipes.

When a secret ingredient is thrown into the mix, can their recipe for a happily-ever-after rise to the occasion, or will it end up a hot mess?

No one likes a crying baby on a plane, and when Kyle Collins, a blast from Gwen’s past,  shows up unexpectedly at the airport and helps her with her screaming daughter, I think she falls a bit in love. I know I did. Kyle is the type of man we all dream of and is a great hero for Gwen and those around him.

I love the uniqueness of Kyle having lost his leg and how it impacted his relationship with Gwen. Gwen is a strong heroine, she has to be for her daughter. She isn’t necessarily looking for a new relationship but Kyle comes in under her radar.

I really loved the small town feel to this story, it really enhanced their love story. I felt like everyone knew each other and really loved how obsessed her father was about basketball and the way that allowed him to interact with Kyle.

There is a interesting twist that adds so drama to the story, it’s well executed. Overall, the story has it all, a small town feel, a unique hero, great chemistry and an adorable baby that ties it all together.

Broken by Lauren Layne - Review/Giveaway

Broken
Redemption # 1
By: Lauren Layne
Releasing September 2nd, 2014
Loveswept

Blurb

Lauren Layne’s New Adult novel tells the story of a girl with secrets, a guy with scars, and a love that could save them both... or destroy them.

When Olivia Middleton abandons the glamour of Park Avenue for a remote, coastal town in Maine, everyone assumes she’s being the kind do-gooder she’s always been. But Olivia has a secret: helping an injured war veteran reenter society isn’t about charity—it’s about penance. Only, Olivia’s client isn’t the grateful elderly man she’s expecting. Instead, he’s a brooding twenty-four-year-old who has no intention of being Olivia’s path to redemption . . . and whose smoldering gaze and forbidden touch might be her undoing.

Paul Langdon doesn’t need a mirror to show him he’s no longer the hotshot quarterback he was before the war. He knows he’s ugly—inside and out. He’ll do anything to stay in self-imposed exile, even accept his father’s ultimatum that Paul tolerate the newest caretaker for three months or lose his inheritance. But Paul doesn’t count on the beautiful twenty-two-year-old who makes him long for things that he can never have. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more keeping his distance is impossible.

Now Paul and Olivia have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Or are they forever broken?

New Adult isn’t my favorite genre, but Broken by Lauren Layne blew me away. I really loved the broody at times downright rude Paul Langdon, and the not willing to take his BS, Olivia Middleton. These were some great characters.

At times I wanted to strangle and smack them for their stubbornness and their quickness to jump to conclusions. This might be explained by the younger ages, after all Olivia is only twenty-two.

I loved that the author does a good job of getting the time to pass quickly and giving Olivia enough sass to handle Paul, and giving Paul some serious back story that supports his gruffness. I understand Paul’s issues and I enjoyed the way that Olivia challenges him to be normal and to live again.

This story has angst, growth and so much tension. I really enjoyed this book and I really recommend it.
