World Change by Maggie Mundy - Interview/Giveaway

World Change
by Maggie Mundy

Clare gets transported from present day Florence to an alternate world, one that looks like fourteenth century Italy. The only way back is through a portal half a world away, plus the local High priestess wants her dead, and the only one she can trust is a vampire called Trevi. He is the only one who exits in this world, and she knows more about what he is than he does. He is hard to resist, especially when he saves her life. Trevi can take her home but he is keeping one big secret. She will have to be like him to survive the journey through the portal back to her world making a myth a reality.

To get started can you tell us what you are working on or have coming out?
I am working on the next book in the Earthbound series and it will be called World Apart. It is based on another world where a mysterious mist has separated the inhabitants from what surrounds them. I also have a novella Blood Oath coming out in October. It is the sequel to my erotic novella Blood Scent that came out last year. It continues the story of my Australian Vampires.

Which genre(s) do you write and is one of them your favorite?

I write what I call speculative fiction which covers an awful lot of genres. My main passion would be for paranormal romance but I also love epic fantasy. I grew up on Lord of the Rings. It is one of the few series of books I have read more than once. I am co-writing a romantic comedy at the moment which is great fun. I have a murder mystery waiting in the wings and a woman’s fiction. If I love the story and the characters I am willing to try anything. I like to get down and dirty and push my characters so there will be sex, love and the likelihood that everything could be lost. No pain no gain.

Tell us about a favorite character from a book.

Pride and Prejudice and Elizabeth Bennett. It may be clichéd and far away from my dark speculative fiction but I love her. Jane Austin was not just a great writer but she wrote characters that told you about the times they lived in. Elizabeth was strong willed and had opinions in a society where women without money had little power. It is something I like to show in the characters in my books. I like my heroines to be empowered and working alongside the men and not rescued by them.

Where do you dream of traveling to and why?

That is easy to answer. Italy. I have always wanted to visit Tuscany and Florence in particular. My book is placed in an alternate world that is similar to Renaissance Italy. I love that time when they had political intrigue, romance and art. It changed the world. I would love to go there  and eat the Italian food and see the wonderful artwork. I also hope to come and visit America next year.

"Your sister is dead. High Priestess Sari needs the life of offworlders to survive. Your sister was sacrificed."

"That's not funny, Tina isn't dead, this is a dream and you're not real. You're a vampire, and vampires don't exist except in myth. You were created to show how the aristocracies were bleeding the peasants dry. Not really bleeding them dry. How did you know my name?"

Clare looked at the room. The food, everything around her appeared real. She needed to wake up now. Grabbing the glass from beside the bed, she smashed it on the tray and scraped it across the palm of her hand. The pain hit immediately as beads of blood formed along the cut.

This wasn't meant to happen; she was meant to wake up. This felt too real, and what was even more real was the look on Trevi's face. His pupils were almost colorless and he opened his mouth in a snarl to reveal fangs. He was on top of the bed crouching above her. It was difficult to see anything of the man who had spoken to her a moment before. He bent down and laid his face next to hers. His cheek cool against hers. As he straddled across her middle, he grabbed her injured hand. Holding it to his mouth, he licked the blood away. Clare fought him and pulled away but he held on tight. Her hand was stinging but when he moved his head away, it was healed. As quickly as he had jumped on the bed, he was gone across the room and crouched in a corner.

I live in Adelaide Australia and I am a member of Romance Writers of Australia, and the local chapter SARA (South Australian Romance Authors). I recently completed a Bachelor of Arts in Drama, English and Creative Writing. I have had a short story published in the RWA Topaz Anthology Little Gems in 2010 called Sea and Vines. I have had an erotic novella called Blood Scent published in July 2013 by Rogue Phoenix Press. I also have a paranormal romance called Hidden Mortality published February 2014 by Soul Mate Publishing. World Change is the first book in the Earthbound Trilogy.

  1. Hi,Maggie! I like the term "speculative fiction." So much tidier than trying to list every genre a book might fit into. So nice to see you touring World Change. :)
