When Wyatt and Michelle leave for Chicago to attend the wedding of an old friend of Michelle’s, Wyatt has no idea how close his beloved Domina is to the edge. While helping Wyatt battle the demons of his PTSD, Michelle has been trying to ignore her own issues, but the past refuses to stay buried and she soon finds herself spiraling out of control. More determined than ever to protect Wyatt from herself, Michelle tries to pretend everything is perfect with devastating results.
Wyatt can see that Michelle is losing it, but he doesn’t know how to help her when she refuses to admit there’s a problem. No longer able to deal with the pressure of pretending to be perfect, Michelle self-destructs. Wyatt is now faced with a bitter choice - leave the woman who owns his heart or start a long and arduous journey to rescue the other half of his soul from her own personal Hell.
Penance is the conclusion of Michelle and Wyatt’s tale of hope, loss, healing, and most of all forgiveness.
I adore this story, this is the kind of story I wish every author would write. It's a story of love and so full of emotion that I hurt right along with the characters. Ms. Mayburn is a true storyteller, she brings these characters to life in such a way that I would love to meet them and call them friends. Top that with her superb ability to write some seriously sexy and very hot scenes, and this is a story and series that I recommend to everyone.
Wyatt and Michelle are both hurting and I enjoyed the fact that their PTSD wasn't just a plot device or a quick fix, that it was very real and influenced their lives heavily. It's refreshing for a story to tackle real life issues while still maintaining that feeling of fantasy that allows full immersion in the world created by Ms. Mayburn.
I highly recommend this story. I really recommend reading the first book Still before tackling Penance, but I do know that I will be sitting down and reading both of them again one right after the other.
