The Rising Popularity of BDSM
I’m doing a presentation for a
local writers conference in September about hooking the Fifty Shades of Gray
readers into your erotic series. You may have noticed the sudden rise in
popularity of BDSM erotic books. Maybe you’re a seasoned veteran of the genre
and thinking, finally, people get it! Or maybe you’re annoyed all these newbies
think they know what your loyal readers want. Or maybe you’re one of the new
readers of this genre and you’re just happy to find other people who enjoy your
fantasies too. Whatever the case, you’re here, checking out my BDSM romance and
I’m glad.
The genre has a lot of enemies.
The feminist movement. Religious groups. The Morality Police (it’s a real
thing. They showed up on my doorstep and almost wrote me a ticket). But as it
gains in popularity, and women free their minds of “shoulds,” people are
realizing there is no right or wrong way to have sex.
No matter what you think about
Fifty Shades of Gray – the writing is terrible or the storyline copycat – the
fact is, it put BDSM on the map. It made it okay to talk about. It gave women
permission to come out and say, “Hey, I like getting a little kinky in the
bedroom.” And that’s a good thing! It’s empowering. You wanna talk about
feminism? How about feeling empowered to ask for what YOU want in the bedroom
instead of just taking what you’re given quietly because that’s how its’ always
been done. Sidenote: Taking what you’re given quietly is a completely
acceptable and popular kink but it’s not what I’m referring to here.
Personally, I’m glad the BDSM
genre is having its time in the spotlight. I’ve spoken with so many women who
crave this type of reading and relationship who’d thought for years there was
something wrong with them. A book can be a powerful thing. I hope mine are
giving people hope and making them believe in love and human decency. I know
erotic books aren’t known as the most poetic or intellectual reading out there,
but I aim for mine to deliver a message. A message that everyone is perfect in
their imperfection. And that finding someone who’s imperfections fit with yours
isn’t impossible.
Blurb:
Reece and Scarlet have
everything a loving couple could want, except a hot kinky sex life. Malachi, an
experienced Dom, steps in to help them sort that out. But not only is he a
terrible memory from Reece’s past, he’s a smartass and damaged goods, too.
As they all learn to trust each other, Malachi becomes more than just their kink coach. It’s a full-on brat smackdown, and no heart gets out unscathed.
Warning: this book contains unrepentant brats, surprise orgasms, a Domme with training wheels, and a Dom whose tongue is registered as a weapon of mass seduction.
BDSM elements, M/F/f, F/f
Excerpt:
“So what gives you a rush then, Scarlet?” Malachi asked.
“Kneeling at Reece’s feet, or making her do what she’s told? Turning her into
your good girl?”
Reece scoffed, but they ignored her.
“Making her your bitch?” he said with a secret look.
She turned to look at Scarlet, hoping she would answer no. A
small smile started at the corner of her lips. Crap. It was clear the idea
appealed to her. She turned that smirk on Reece.
“Mmm. But she’s not my bitch.” She slung her arm around her
shoulders and pulled Reece against her body. “She’s my little kitten.”
Though she often pretended to be offended by the pet name,
secretly she loved it. Still, in front of Malachi? “Scarlet,” she whined and
tried to pull away.
“I’m looking forward to working with you two,” Malachi said.
Reece shot up. “What? What do you mean? I thought we were
just talking.”
He nodded and leaned back. “I think I have an idea what’s
going on but I need to see you play before I know for sure.”
Play? With him watching? No way. She’d be too nervous, too
self-conscious. Relaxing would be impossible. She shook her head. “It won’t
work. I won’t be able to be myself with you watching.”
“I’ll blend into the background. I promise.”
She was still shaking her head when Scarlet chimed in. “We
can try it, Reece. We’ll go slow. You might get into it and forget he’s there.”
“No way am I letting him,”
she threw a hand out toward him, “see me naked.”
“Who said anything about naked?” he asked, leaned back
against the seat, looking all cocky male. How dare he sit there, all hot and
tattooed and muscley? He looked like the centerfold in a male stripper
magazine, even with his clothes on – albeit less sleazy. His form-fitting
t-shirt hugged his lean muscles and made her want to see what he had under
there.
She eyed him warily. “You want me to keep my clothes on?”
“No. Of course I want you to take them off.”
She rolled her eyes and he put a hand out to stop a
potential protest.
“But I understand why you wouldn’t. So I will permit you to
keep them on. For now.”
Crossing her arms over her chest, she arched a brow.
“Permit? You’re not my Dom.”
“No. But I might be teaching your girlfriend how to be one.”
He leaned forward and grabbed Reece’s hand. “So get used to it, kitten,” he
said then placed a kiss on her palm.
She yanked her hand away and pouted at Scarlet. “Do
something!”
Her girlfriend leaned back, mimicking Malachi’s cocky look.
“She inspires a trip over your knee, doesn’t she?” she said to Malachi with a
smirk.
He nodded. “That she does.”
