#NewRelease Dirty Martini 2: The Screwdriver by G.R. George

Marty Lincoln and Chris Lawson are only happy when they’re in each other’s arms. Unfortunately, their relationship remains long-distance as Marty completes his final months in the Army. Chris has a new and challenging job that keeps him busy, but he yearns every day for Marty. Marty suffers from PTSD and needs Chris as his anchor. Time apart feeds the doubts each man harbors as they deal with their tragic pasts and try to hold on to the love blooming between them. Will fear make them give up before they even get started? Or will love find a way?

Excerpt:

 Mid-August…
Marty pulled up into the parking lot of Chris’s apartment complex in his mid-sized rental car. The evening heat and humidity clung to his skin. He and Chris had talked at least three times a week since that first phone call a month earlier, but he’d really wanted to see the man again. They’d decided to meet up on Chris’s first weekend off since becoming day manager at the bar. Marty had the jitters. What if they didn’t have the same chemistry? The same spark? All their intimacies since June had been via phone.
Chris had suggested video chat, but Marty had been too much of a chicken. Living in the military made a man paranoid about privacy. He pulled his tee shirt at the collar to let in some air, mustering his courage. The heat exacerbated the oily scent of the recently tarred parking lot. He smiled, remembering the choice words Chris had about the tar sticking to his tires. The outside steps leading to the second floor were concrete. Marty gripped the metal railing. His leg ached as he walked the flight to apartment 3B.
He bit his upper lip, running his fingers through his hair, as he stood at the door. His stomach ached with a misery born of anticipation and fear. His impulse was to bang down the door, but instead, he simply knocked. Twice.
The door opened. Chris smiled. “You made it.” Chris wore a kiwi-green tee shirt that brightened the green in his hazel eyes and a pair of low-slung jeans that hugged his narrow hips. His chestnut hair was neatly combed, and his narrow, angular face was clean shaven.
“You look nice,” Marty said.
Chris stepped back inside his apartment. “Come in. You’ve had a long trip. The bathroom is the door across the way.” There were two doors off the living room. Chris pointed the nearest one. “If you need to use it.”
“I’m fine,” Marty said. The living room and kitchen were combined in the small apartment. Chris had a blue couch, a coffee table, a recliner, and a small flat screen on a stand across the room from the couch in the living room. The kitchen had a three-by-three wooden table, four chairs, a fridge, dishwasher, sink, stove, and limited counter and cabinet space. The place wouldn’t win any decorating awards, but it was clean.
“Do you want to sit down?” Chris asked.
“Sure.” Marty felt let down by Chris’s mild reaction. He wasn’t sure what he’d expected, but this congenial greeting hadn’t been it. “It’s good to see you.”
“You too,” Chris said. “Can I get you a drink? Beer? Wine?”
“Sure. I’ll take whatever beer you have.” He watched Chris open the fridge and heard the telltale clinking of bottles.
Chris brought two beers into the living room. The bottles hissed as he popped the tops with an opener. He sat on the couch next to Marty. “Here you go.”
The cold bottle sweated against his hot, clammy hands. He swigged the beer, glad to have a reason not to talk for a moment. They’d talked so much on the phone over the past month that he’d assumed they’d never run out of things to say.
“So,” Chris said. “Long drive, huh?”
Wow, this conversation really was going nowhere. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah,” Chris said. “Yes, of course. Why? Is everything okay with you?”
“Sure.” Marty scratched at the small hole near the knee of his jeans. “Good.” Why was this so goddamn hard? He turned to Chris and waited for Chris to meet his gaze.
They both laughed nervously.
“Maybe you should kiss me,” Marty said.

The mixed feelings Brice had about his homecoming knotted into concern. Granny knew wolfan law forbade adult males and females of blood relation to share bedding, so why had she fallen asleep in his room?

“Granny?” He eased onto the edge of the mattress and touched her leg.

An unfamiliar feminine gasp prickled the skin along his spine.
“Who the hell are you?” Brice didn’t mean to sound so rough and angry, but pain and exhaustion made him edgy and terse.

“Stay away from me!” The woman kicked out of bed and grappled with the bedside lamp.

“Fuck!” The sudden brightness stung like a fistful of sand slung in his face. Shielding his light-sensitive eyes behind his arm, Brice tuned into his other senses. The air thickened. He could almost taste the sharp tang of her fear. Her breaths came hard and fast.

“Get out before I call the cops,” she demanded.

“With what? Telepathy?” To his knowledge, Granny had one telephone. A landline in the kitchen.

“I have a cell phone.” The uncertainty in the woman’s voice said she didn’t.

“Nice try.” Swiping his eyes, Brice sensed a change in the air pressure, heard a hitch in her breathing. His instinct warned that she had inched to her right.

“I don’t need my eyes to track you.” He pointed to where he knew she stood.

The woman stopped moving and quite possibly stopped breathing. Nothing but howling silence filled the space between them. Any second she would hit the floor in a dead faint. Brice forced his eyes to open.

Not that he had any doubts, but the fragile-looking young woman pressed against the wall was definitely not his grandmother. Wild spirals of red hair gave her a sexy bed-head look regardless of the cornered animal glint in her cinnamon eyes.

She wore an old Maico High baseball jersey. Wait. That was his old baseball jersey.

His bed, his clothes. What else had she claimed that belonged to him?

And why?

She was human and likely unaware of the implications of marking a male Wahya’s belongings with her scent.

As if he could smell her anyway.

Still, that this small slip of a woman had claimed his discarded clothes and his abandoned bed sparked a possessive thump in his chest. His gaze prowled the small swell of her breasts and the narrow curve of her hips cloaked beneath his shirt.
She sported the longest legs he’d ever seen on someone so petite. Soft, toned legs that inspired steamy visions of them tangled around his hips as he moved inside her until she shattered in ecstasy, breaking him with her.

The full moon had passed, so his attraction was real. Not something prompted by primitive hormones riddling him to fuck the nearest willing female. That this one didn’t look so willing was like an ice dump on his stiffening cock.

#Review Backlash by @BSommerland #WintersWrath

Title: Backlash
Author: Bianca Sommerland
Series: Winter's Wrath 1
Rating: 4.5 Books
Blurb:

Outcasts, black sheep, those who never fit in anywhere. Winter’s Wrath belongs to them. Every single member of the band rejects the norm when it comes to music.
They won’t settle when it comes to love.

Alder Trousseau, the lead guitarist in a band that owns his heart and soul, has always stood in the shadow of a man he hates. Braver “Brave” Trousseau, the voice of Winter’s Wrath.

For the success of the band, they have to work past their animosity, but that’s difficult when they have the same taste in women. And men.

Sex is a game to Brave. A game that might leave the people Alder cares for completely broken. Unless he claims them for his own.

If he steps out of the shadows, he’ll have no choice to play. To win.

On stage, the drama drives the fans insane. The songs they sing are a blood racing, body moving, warcry. But the very real battle taking place between the snares and the mic might tear the band apart.

Ms. Sommerland sucked me in, she drew me in and made me fall completely in love with the whole band. I haven’t read a lot of Rock star romances but if any of them are as half as good as Ms. Sommerland’s I will be picking them up!

Alder Trousseau has lived in his brother’s shadow for a while, but he loves his brother and doesn’t really mind. I adored Alder, not just because he is one of the sweetest men when it comes to those he loves but because he comes off the page as genuine, someone who I would gladly hang out with, and the way he takes care of everyone around him. Definitely in love.

Danica makes no apologies for putting her career first, even as she feels a bit awkward asking Alder to let her use him. I don’t think she expects for fall in love with Alder so quickly or fall in love with the whole band and find herself a solid family.

Brave Trousseau is the lead singer, and there are times where I was pissed at him. I wanted to smack him and say be nice to your brother. He definitely redeemed himself a bit, and I really want to read his story.

This is a menage, and Ms. Sommerland definitely brings the heat and the sexy and I fell in love with Alder and Danica’s third, I’m going to leave it to the reader to figure that out, because I enjoyed watching the relationship unfold. There is action, lust, sex, music and overall it’s a very enjoyable read that has me anxiously awaiting more.

Before you get down on bended knee…

…you should be pretty darn sure the answer will be yes. For ten years, Connor O'Rourke has been waiting for Jessica Dunn to take their on-again, off-again relationship public, and he thinks the time has come. His restaurant is thriving, she's got her dream job at Blue Heron Vineyard—it's the perfect time to get married.

When he pops the question, however, her answer is a fond but firm no. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Jess has her hands full with her younger brother, who's now living with her full-time, and a great career after years of waitressing. What she and Connor have is perfect: friends with an excellent benefits package. Besides, with her difficult past (and reputation), she's positive married life isn't for her.

But this time, Connor says it's all or nothing. If she doesn't want to marry him, he'll find someone who does. Easier said than done, given that he's never loved anyone but her. And maybe Jessica isn't quite as sure as she thinks…

Kristan Higgins never fails to tell a fresh story, as proved by the interesting beginnings to her novels. In the long-awaited tale of Connor O’Rourke, (twin of Colleen, who we met in Waiting on You) she begins with Connor getting his proposal of marriage denied rather bluntly. To say that Jessica Dunn is not a likeable heroine in that first chapter is an understatement—she utterly shatters the hero, Connor. At this point, I paused in my reading (an accomplishment, as I gobble down Higgins’ books like they’re candy) and wondered… how is she going to do it? How is she going to make me like this woman who walked coldly away from a man who clearly loves her so very much?

She manages this with a shockingly pleasing combination of flashbacks and flash forwards, a technique I’m not usually fond of, but it really works in this piece. Once we get a good look at the whole relationship, the line between good guy and bad guy blurs to the point of being invisible. Soon, I found myself rooting for them to work it out because, although they were human and both made their mistakes, they clearly needed one another in a way that no other would ever quite fit.

As with most of the books in the Blue Heron, (and a lot of her books, in general) the cast of secondary characters planted me comfortably back in the middle of small town life. From the familiar and beloved Holland family to the newly introduced Dunn family, each seemed like people you’d meet and known in your day-to-day life. Higgins did an especially good job with Jessica’s little brother—Davey—in presenting a realistic kid with special needs. As a parent of special needs kiddos, I can vouch for the fact they can drive you to distraction. Surviving meltdowns and so many doctor visits can leave a parent or caregiver worn down, tired, and not sure how they’re going to make it to tomorrow.

With Jessica being so young when she took on this burden, it isn’t surprising to see her have hollowed out moments when she’s not sure what to do next or if she’s mucking it all up, yet Higgins found the joyful moments, too. The fact that kids who see things in a different way share that unique view with their loved ones—tiny snippets of slowing things down and enjoying the truly little moments. The love for this sister had for her brother was heartrending and exceptionally well-written.

As to the romance? Sizzling. It is clear from very early on that Connor and Jessica share a fiery hot connection and that their friendship never took a back burner to that passion really cemented their bond for me as a reader. Connor is what we’d all like to find in a man—solid, sexy, smart, the heart of a marshmallow hidden in a gruff manly exterior, kind, and all in all just a GOOD guy. I fell madly and deeply in love with him and ugly cried when Connor said, “You’re gonna do great, sister mine.” I won’t spoil the scene as to why he said that to Colleen, but that scene… in Connor’s work kitchen?

Yeah, I bawled.

But that is the magic of a Higgins book. She’s never let me down. I laugh out loud. I bawl the kind of cleansing tears that actually make you feel better after they’re shed. I look at the whole world with a little bit of hope that maybe there is good out there.

We live in a dark and scary time, full of things that are upsetting and waken all those dark creeping thoughts in our minds and imaginations. This book, as with many of her stories, managed to bring light and a little bit of joy to me. I highly, highly recommend this book to those who like happy endings. To those who like falling in love. And to those who maybe need to be reminded that it isn’t where you come from, it is all about where you’re going and who you pick to make the trip with.

Simply said, I loved this book and I think you might, too.
