It wasn't until she watched her best friend find the man of her dreams that RayAnne Hill realized there was a part of her missing. She knows the empty space can only be filled by finding her own true love, complete with kids and the white picket fence. Fear of letting someone in stops her cold, and it's much bigger than just finding Mr. Right.

James Shaw moved away from Kentucky and the family business to chase his own goals, settling in the small town of Kimmswick, Missouri. His business is succeeding, now he's ready to complete his life with a wife and kids. One night, one look and he's found her. RayAnne is everything he's been searching for.

As hard as James has fallen for RayAnne, can he be enough to help her overcome her worst nightmare? Or will he decide he can't wait forever, and walk away to find happiness?

Now enjoy an excerpt:

By the time his heart came back on line the group had broken off into two directions, one of the women went to find a seat while the blonde headed to the bar. With a man. Just his luck. But he couldn’t keep his eyes off the way she sauntered up to the bar, her hips wiggling just enough to draw his attention. As he watched her order he noticed the man had his sights set on the other woman they’d arrived with. She had spiky black hair, piercings, and tattoos. Maybe his day wasn’t doomed after all. The dark haired one wasn’t his type. But the blonde…the cute, innocence of her face contrasted with the sexy short shorts and flannel shirt tied at her waist. She was exactly his type.

She looked up and down the patrons, stopping at him. James couldn’t pry himself away from her gaze. He winked and she grinned before offering him a finger wave. A little vixen.

“Hi.” Her cute, kissable mouth formed the word.

“Hey, sugar,” he replied, garnering the attention of the guy standing at her side. The other man glanced down the bar at him and cocked an eyebrow. Did they know each other? James didn’t think so, but he wasn’t very good at names or faces, so it was possible.

James broke their connection, turning to signal the bartender he wanted another round. As he tipped the bottle back, a warm, soft touch landed against his neck. “Save me a dance, cowboy,” the sweet words were whispered in his ear.

Fiance by Fate by Jennifer Shirk - Spotlight/Giveaway

Fiancé by Fate
by Jennifer Shirk

Their fake relationship is a twist of fate.

Sabrina Cassidy believes in fate. So when her fiancé breaks off their engagement, she’s convinced they’ll get back together eventually. But fate was not on her side when it brought Jack Brenner into her life—and work. Frustrating, gorgeous, and cocky, Jack has an offer that Sabrina can't refuse. Not if it means getting the life she’s always imagined.

Despite being one of the town’s most eligible bachelors, Jack has a reputation that’s working against him. He has to convince his father—and his company’s board—that he’s ready to settle down if he wants a promotion. But convincing Sabrina to be his fake girlfriend turns out to be the easiest part. What he didn’t count on was their intense attraction and how easily their lie would escalate.

Sabrina’s still hung up on her ex, and Jack will never settle down.

But fate has other ideas…

She stared at him. Oh, she knew Jack was arrogant, but this? This comment completely confirmed the God complex she always suspected he had. “You? You would help me get my fiancé back?”

“Ex-fiancé,” he corrected. “But yes, I would.”

She narrowed her eyes and allowed her voice to dip into a warning tone. “And why would you do that?”

His lips shifted to an easy smile. “I have a deep-rooted desire to see my new partner happy and settled in her life. Is that so wrong?”

She snorted-laughed. “For you? It’s very wrong. You’re up to something.”

He pressed a hand to his chest and rubbed, pretending to be wounded. “I’m truly hurt that you would think that I—”

“Just get to the point, Jack. What do you want in return?”

For the first time since she’d known him, Jack actually looked uncomfortable. He cleared his throat a few times before answering. “Between you and me, I didn’t get that promotion because the board feels my personal life may need a makeover. Of sorts. My father unfortunately agrees.”

“Mm-hmm. Not to take sides, but when your recent breakup starts trending on Twitter, your personal life might need a little reevaluating.”

She had the satisfaction of seeing his eyes narrow. “Yes, well, my dad has even gone so far as to say that I should find a nice sensible girl and settle down.”

“What do you want me to do? Find you a nice, normal girl to make you look respectable?” She thought about Maddie but worried that maybe she was too nice and sensible for him. It could be like putting a goldfish and a piranha together in a fish tank. She couldn’t do that to Maddie. She couldn’t do that to any woman she knew.

“Actually…” His gaze lingered on his clenched fists, then swung up and pinned her to her seat. “I already found the perfect girl.”

            Several seconds ticked by.

Realization hit her and she jumped off the bench. “Not on your life.”

Jack grabbed her hand and pulled her back down. “Will you listen before jumping to conclusions? I’m not asking you to settle down with me for real. Just for pretend.”

“You’re insane,” she said, shaking off his hand. “Of all the women in Boston, why me?”

“Well, look at you,” he said, pointing. She followed his finger and looked down but only saw a cream-colored turtleneck over a black wool skirt. “You’re hardworking, sensible, and obviously want to get married,” he continued. “Pretty much the antithesis of every woman I’ve dated.”

“You mean because my IQ is larger than my bra size?”

His lips thinned. “I mean because you have my father’s respect.”

“I do?” She frowned, not because she was unhappy to hear that information but because she was surprised. “Then why did he pass me over for a senior wholesaling position?”

            “What? You wanted my job?”

She waved his question away. “Never mind.” She sighed, putting her head in her hands. Yes, she felt she should have gotten Jack’s territory. But it didn’t matter. It wasn’t the time to get into work issues. Right now her priority was David.

“Sabrina, will you shove your animosity toward me away for one brief second and think about this? It would be a win-win for both of us. David thinks you’re adoringly waiting in the wings, giving him as long as it takes to make up his mind.”

She dropped her hands and blinked. “But he would be right.”

“No, you have to change his thinking. He has to believe you’ve moved on. And the best way to do that is by making him think you’re interested in another man. Another man who happens to be number three on New England’s Top Bachelors list would be quite the coup. If David just has cold feet like you say he does, then there’s nothing like good old-fashioned jealousy to warm them up again.”

            “That’s original,” she murmured.

He shrugged. “I find the classics work best.”

“What would I have to do exactly?” she asked.

Jack scanned around them, then lowered his voice. “Convince everyone in the office, including my father, that we’re in a serious relationship. Perhaps attend a few high-profile events with me. David has to think we’re dating anyway. Pretty simple when you think about it.”

Sabrina felt her stomach tighten. Nothing seemed simple at all. “How long would I have to…pretend?”

“I’m not sure. At least until the next quarterly board meeting—even if David comes back to you before then. I need to look as if I gave this relationship at least the old college try.”

“I—I don’t know.” She began chewing on her thumbnail in thought, then cast a side glance at Jack.

David would be jealous of a man like Jack. She didn’t doubt it. Jack was ridiculously good-looking. Intelligent—mostly. And rich. He also had the kind of wide shoulders and brawny arms that could wrap around a female wrestler and somehow make her feel as delicate as a flower. Jack certainly seemed the kind of man any woman would love to catch on the rebound from a broken heart. Not her, of course. She had no interest in rich, handsome playboys.

            But David didn’t know that.

The whole idea still sounded so wrong, so sordid. She doubted anyone at work would believe she and Jack would even think about dating each other. But maybe luck threw Jack in her path for a reason. Would she be a fool not to take him up on it? Was Jack part of her “journey” to David that Madame Butterfly had mentioned? She couldn’t be sure. She needed more time to think.

“It would mean a lot to me,” Jack added.

She shot him a look. “Oh, gee, now there’s an incentive. Why didn’t you say so in the first place?”

He let out a muffled snort, but she couldn’t tell if it was from laughter or frustration. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out his wallet. He took his business card and tucked it in her palm. “My cell phone number is on the back in case you change your mind after work. Call me anytime.”

“I bet you say that to all the girls,” she said, batting her eyelashes.

Jack let out a slow, predatory grin that disintegrated her mocking attitude.

“No, not all the girls,” he said in a silky voice. His warm hand closed over hers, and he leaned in so close she could feel his breath on her cheek. “I only say that to my girlfriends.”

A Romantica® Paranormal erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

Forbidden love…Undeniable passion.

A unique shifter story is so hard to find, but Ms. Corrigan definitely took me on a unique journey. Yeah, Josh and Mira’s love affair had a small Romeo and Juliet, star-crossed lovers thing going on, but rules are meant to broken.

I really loved the loopholes and the unique way that Ms. Corrigan uses to give us that happily ever after. It’s not how I thought it was going to go, but it works perfectly with this story. I really loved Josh, he doesn’t give up on his woman, and uses every arsenal in his repertoire to seduce and keep her. I love that about him. Mira is a very strong heroine and while she protests and fights their attraction for his own good, I did enjoy the way she was almost powerless in the face of his seduction because she loves him to her very core.

Overall, I really loved this story, it had heart, passion and the right amount of obsession and single-minded determination and devotion to prove that it will work out long term. I really can’t recommend this series or this story enough. It’s unique, it’s fun and the men are sexy and very alpha while the heroines are sassy, strong and with just the right amount of soft femininity to tame their mates.

I received a copy in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my review.

Excerpt:

He pressed his groin to hers, careful not to scrape his zipper against her delicate cleft. The press of his erection nestled in her seam. She shuddered under him, eyelashes fluttering. He grinned. Damn, he enjoyed seeing her lost to desire.

He leaned in, pressed his nose to the delicate spot where neck met shoulder and inhaled. Her fragrance, so familiar, filled him. He breathed slowly, in and out, enjoying every intimate detail of the moment.

“Josh.”

A single word that told him everything. He turned his head to study her face. The confirmation he didn’t really need blazed in her eyes. She wanted him, maybe even loved him too.

“Mira, my Mira.”

“Always and forever.” She pressed her mouth to his but didn’t kiss him. Their lips rubbed as she brushed hers back and forth over his. The light touch ignited him as much as when their tongues twined and rolled.

“Always and forever,” he repeated.

He held her gaze and luxuriated in the knowledge he wasn’t alone in this crazy, all-consuming desire.

“You ready for more?”

“Yes, more.”

He sat back on bent legs between her spread thighs. She lay before him, open and inviting. Her pink, swollen lips glistened with her juices. The scent of feminine arousal drew him. He leaned forward, unable to help himself, and licked along her cleft. By sheer will alone, he forced his body away from hers.

Arms spread out to the side, he locked his gaze with hers. “Then take me, Mira. I’m yours.”

Holy Heaven. She would never take a bath for granted again.

Violet stumbled on the stairs and the contents of the heavy bucket sloshed, dousing her with hot water. She sucked in a breath as pain seared. She set the bucket on the landing and pulled her skirts up. Her skin was red. She ruffled the tatters of her petticoats, waiting for the sting to subside.

The door to the Laird’s solar swung open. She stepped back so it wouldn’t hit her and it slammed into the wall. The McCloud glowered down at her. His gaze stalled on her bare legs. It was riveted—until she dropped her skirts—then he snapped, “What the hell is taking so long?” His glanced back at her damp skirts and his frown darkened. He picked up the last bucket and carried it to the tub, dumping it in himself. “For god’s sake. How long does it take to bring a few measly buckets up from the kitchen?”

A few measly buckets? It had taken twelve trips, each with a bucket that weighed near as much as she. Violet glared at him. “Is that enough?” She probably didn’t need to clip the words quite so much but she had already worked for hours. She was tired and sweaty and her skin ached and Morna was waiting for her to come help prepare dinner.

He swished his hand in the water. “Yes. I suppose that will do.”

Not a thank you. Not a smile. Nothing.

Beast.

She whirled and started for the door.

“Where do you think you’re going?” His voice rumbled, a deep tenor. Her steps slowed.

“Back to the kitchen.” She frowned at him over her shoulder. “I have work to do.”

“You have work to do here.”

“I beg your pardon?” What did he want her to do now, wash his bottom?

“You’re going to bathe me.”

Her heart stilled at his words, his intent, and especially his expression. “Wh-what?”

“Come now, Violet. The laird of the manor can’t be expected to scrub his own back, can he now? Be a good girl, close the door and come over here.”

She gaped at him. Gaped. He expected her to remain in a room with a naked man? He expected her to touch him?

“Close your mouth. You look like a trout.”

“But…I c-can’t. I can’t b-bathe you.”

“You can. And you will.” His eyes glimmered with something other than humor. The unspoken threat hummed in the stony chamber. “You may want to turn around while I undress, unless you want an early education.” He began to unbutton his shirt.

With an undignified eep, Violet whirled and showed him her back until she heard the splash and his gusty sigh.

“All right, girl. Get to work. Scrub my back.” He gestured to a chunk of soap and a sponge on a small table. She picked them up, approached the tub and knelt behind him, trying not to stare at the bunching muscles, the broad expanse of tanned skin. She couldn’t help but notice it was covered with scars. Long and short, crisscrossing over one another. As though he’d been brutally beaten and lashed time after time after—“Did you close the door?”
Her bubbling sympathy evaporated in a rush. She stuck her tongue out at him, but only because he couldn’t see. Then, with a heavy sigh, she levered herself off the floor and closed the door. Well, slammed it.

His chuckle annoyed her more.

He leaned forward and peeped at her over his shoulder. “Come along now. My back isn’t going to scrub itself.”

She took her place behind him again, being very careful not to look at his broad, be-furred chest as she approached. She wet the soap and sponge and created a lather. Being very careful not to touch him, she began to scour his back. He winced. “Not so hard.”

His plaintive tone probably shouldn’t have sent a shard of evil satisfaction through her, but it did. This man had been a boor to her from the moment he’d found her on the floor in Callum MacAllister’s cottage. She dug deeper.

He lurched forward. “Ouch!”

“Hold still,” she muttered, making a wide swath across the ridged skin. “You’re filthy. I need to scrub.”

“I am not filthy.”

“You are. Stop wriggling.”

Amazingly, he did, though her efforts bordered on abuse. But my, it felt good.
When she started on his neck and ears, he caught her wrist. “All right. I think that’s enough.”

“I’m not done.”

“Oh, you’re not done.” He tugged her around to the side of the tub so she faced him. She focused on his crooked nose, schooled her attention not to drift lower. “Now it’s time for you to scrub my front.”

She really disliked his tone. There was mischief—and something much darker—coiling in there. “Fine.” She dropped to her knees and wet the sponge again, but rather than dunking it, merely skimmed the surface of the water.

Fortunately the bath was murky, so she couldn’t see anything. But she knew what was down there and she didn’t want to find it by accident. She trained her attention on his chest, and her heart lurched.

A long, nasty scar scored him. Like a puckered lightning bolt, it made its jagged way from his left nipple down to his belly. Her pulse skittered. Her breath snagged in her throat. She’d only ever seen a scar like that once before.

A scar exactly like that.

Her gaze snapped back to his face. She looked at him. Really looked at him, perhaps for the first time. Her mouth went dry. The gray eyes laced by thick black lashes. The broad, smiling mouth. The curve of his jaw.
It couldn’t be. Could it?
“W-where did you get that scar?”
He glanced down and stilled. Annoyance flickered across his features. “Every man has scars.”
“Not-not like that.” She sat back on her haunches. She didn’t realize she was squeezing the sponge until water seeped through her skirts.

“All right. A knife fight.”

“Knives don’t cut like that.” It was uneven and rippled, as though the flesh and been shorn off in places and sliced in others.

“Well, it was a goddamn knife fight. I was in a vicious battle with a man in an alley. I gutted him.” His lip curled into a sneer. “Does it frighten you, my lady?”

“No.” But that was a lie. It did frighten her. Because Ewan, her friend, the boy who had saved her, had gotten an eerily similar wound rescuing her from a watery grave. And surely this wasn’t Ewan. It couldn’t be.

Ewan was gentle and sweet. He had liked her, maybe loved her. He had kissed her. And this man… This man had taken her prisoner and mauled her and put her to work.

And she hated him.

He couldn’t be Ewan. He couldn’t. It would break her heart.

“Goddamn it, girl, finish washing me. The water’s getting cold,” he barked
But she couldn’t. She needed to know. She had to know.

“It wasn’t a knife. It was ice.” A whisper, but he heard it. He froze, his gaze locked to hers. “You jumped in and found me in the water. Lifted me out. But you couldn’t get out yourself.”

“I don’t know what you’re babbling about.”

But he did. She could see it in his eyes. There, for a flash of an instant, she saw that boy in his eyes.

She licked suddenly dry lips. “Ewan? Is it you?”

He rose from the tub in an unholy rush. She didn’t have time to glanced away. The vision of his naked body, hard and lean, scarred and perfect, burned on her brain. He grabbed a cloth and covered his loins.

“This bath is over. Get out.”

She stood. Tried desperately not to tremble. “It is you. It is.”

“Get out. Go!”

“What happened to you, Ewan?”

A dark cloud lowered on his already stormy brow. “What happened to me? You mean how did I become the beast that I am?” The vitriol in his voice made her shake, but she didn’t back down.

“No, Ewan. Where did you go? No one would tell me and I always wondered…”

Every muscle in his body tensed, vibrated. Violet knew, because she could see them all, a magnificent panoply.

She should have been afraid. She should have been horrified. She should have skittered away like a frightened little rabbit. But she wasn’t afraid. She didn’t run.

She knew—knew—her Ewan would never hurt her.

Indeed, as he stared at her, his fury passed. He scrubbed a palm over his broad face. “Go,” he croaked. His tone was laced with an emotion she couldn’t decipher. Desolation? Greif? “Just go.”

This time, she did.
